There’s something beautiful about starting your day with intention, and I have been working on a mindful morning ritual for a while now. Slow mornings have become sacred, allowing quiet time to breathe, meditate, and nourish my body.

One of my favourite slow wellness rituals is drinking a homemade lemon and ginger shot first thing in the morning. These little wellness shots pack a punch! They are a burst of vitamin C, anti-inflammatory properties, and an energy boost.

If you want to support your immune system during flu season, ease digestive issues, or add a mindful ritual to your morning, these lemon and ginger shots are a beautiful (and spicy!) place to start.

Why Lemon & Ginger?

This simple recipe uses fresh ginger root and lemons, which are celebrated in the wellness world for their health benefits.

Ginger is a flowering plant known for its powerful antioxidant properties and ability to soothe an upset stomach, support the digestive system, and even lower blood sugar levels. It’s often used in ginger supplements and herbal teas, but fresh ginger shots offer the most juice and potent flavour.

Lemon juice, on the other hand, is loaded with vitamin C, which helps support immune health and may help the body better absorb iron from plant-based foods. It’s also thought to balance the body’s pH and promote heart health.

Lemon and ginger form a powerhouse duo used in traditional wellness practices for centuries.

Benefits of Ginger Shots

  • Boosts the immune system with vitamin C and antiviral properties
  • Supports digestion and helps ease bloating and nausea
  • Reduces inflammation, muscle soreness, and joint pain
  • Provides an energy boost thanks to its spicy kick
  • May support weight loss by increasing the thermic effect of food
  • Can help regulate blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels

How to Make Homemade Ginger Shots

You don’t need a fancy juicer to make a basic ginger shot at home, just a high-speed blender or food processor, a fine mesh strainer and a few pantry staples.

This easy recipe makes a large batch so you can store ginger shots in your fridge or freezer for the week ahead.

Homemade Lemon Ginger Shot Recipe

Ingredients

  • A pinch of black pepper (to boost turmeric absorption if using)
  • 100g fresh ginger (skin can be left on)
  • 20g fresh turmeric
  • Juice of 2–3 fresh lemons
  • Juice of 1 large orange
  • ½ cup water or coconut water
  • 1 tsp raw honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chop the ginger and turmeric.
  2. Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender or food processor. Blend until smooth (ish).
  3. Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer, using the back of a spoon to press out the most juice. Throw away the remaining pulp, or compost it.
  4. Pour into a small glass jar or an airtight container.
  5. Ginger shots can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  6. For extended storage, freeze them in ice cube trays or a freezer-safe bag. Thaw a cube overnight and give it a good shake before drinking.

How to Use Ginger Shots Mindfully

You can drink your lemon ginger shot straight from a small glass each morning on an empty stomach or dilute it with warm water. I like to sip mine (in warm water) slowly, breathing deeply between sips and checking in with my body.

It’s more than just a wellness shot. It’s a pause, a simple way to begin the day connected and present.

They’re also fantastic for stirring into warm water for a calming tonic before bed.
