FLUUS: Sustainable Brand Review
Fluus: Brand Review
Fluus– The first fully flushable period pads
As a woman, I have been using different types of period products since I was about 13. The majority of them have been single-use but they are a necessary product in my bathroom drawer and something that I can’t avoid.
There is currently no sustainable way to dispose of period products. 56% of period products in the UK end up in Landfills and generate over 200,000 tonnes of waste in the UK every year.
30% of period products are flushed. I have to admit when I was younger (before I was aware of the harm period products caused to the environment) I would flush my tampon down the loo!
This generates over 3.4 tonnes of microplastics that often end up in our waterways. The final 14% of period products in the UK are incinerated.
Since getting more into sustainability and trying to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle I have tried a few alternatives. These include period knickers, period cups and now the Fluus flushable period pads.
The Brand
It all started in 2016 when the founders of Fluus Liv and Aaron met at University. They started to develop the first flushable pad prototype. In 2018 they were making pads by hand and in 2019 they conducted their first large-scale trial for over 2,500 participants.
They worked alongside the Water Research Centre and received their WIS 4-02-06 certificate. This is an independent, internationally-recognised certificate for flushing things down the toilet.
Fluus was launched in 2023 as the ‘first flushable period pad’. Wahooo!
How is Fluus Sustainable?
Market-leading period pads are around 90% plastic. The Fluus period pad is microplastic-free, meaning no microplastics from their period pads enter our waterways.
Most period waste will hang around in landfill for over 500 years which is mindblowing but these pads use plant fibres and natural adhesives to make them strong and absorbent. Plus 100% biodegradable when flushed down the loo.
This is such a clever design and something we have been waiting for for a long time. Flushable period products are long overdue and now they are available to buy! What a great step for the sustainability space.
My Thoughts
When I was contacted by Fluus to try their period products for free I was really excited! I had tried a period cup before which I didn’t massively get on with (probs need to try that again) but was definitely up for giving these a go.
Packaging
The packaging was great, they were quite small and tightly wrapped so I don’t think they would open up, even if you throw them in your bag like I do.
There are two stickers instead of the usual one where the pad will stick into your underwear. I did find it a little tricky to take these off the pad so it was a bit more of a faff. Although defo worth it knowing they had the sustainability factor.
Quality
The quality was very good and comfortable to wear. Initially, the pad looked like it would be hard on your skin but it was actually really soft. I could feel the pad but it wasn’t that much of an issue and only as much as you would feel other pads. So if you’re used to wearing them it shouldn’t be a problem.
Absorbency
The absorbency was absolutely fine for me. I have a small to medium flow and they didn’t leak or move whilst attached to my underwear. Bonus!
Flushing the Fluus
The weirdest thing was the flushing! Even though I know they are 100% flushable it still felt strange! But it was so easy and convenient and felt so good knowing I was wearing period products that were going to dissolve and not pollute the earth for hundreds of years!
Cost
The price point is slightly higher than some other brands on the high street. They are priced at £5 for 15 pads but I would say if you can afford the extra few quid it is worth it to have a zero-waste period.
Would I Recommend Fluus?
I would definitely recommend Fluus!
Note: if you’re a regular thong wearer I’m not sure it is the best alternative in the daytime. But you never know, hopefully, they will make some flushable tampons in the future too!
If you try Fluus pads, make sure you let me know what you think! I would love to know.
