This DIY heart garland project is an eco-friendly and creative way to upcycle an old pink shirt into charming Valentine’s Day decor. I thrifted my shirt from the local charity shop, but you may have something similar you would get rid of, which is even better.
I love to craft using second-hand clothes as they are cheaper and more eco-friendly than buying new fabric.
Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to add a loving touch to your home with adorable and unique decorations. You might be decorating for a romantic occasion, having a party, or simply wanting to brighten your space. If that sounds like you, this craft activity is for you.
DIY Heart Garland for Valentine’s Day Made from an Old Shirt
Materials You’ll Need
- An old pink shirt (or fabric in colors like peach, red, or white)
- A heart-shaped template (use a piece of cardboard to create your own)
- Scissors
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Needle and coral thread (or yarn in your chosen color)
- Glue (if you prefer not to sew)
- A long piece of twine (I use this one), natural cord, or braided strands
- Optional: pom poms, scrapbook paper, or paint chips for embellishments
This is the pink shirt I thrifted. I love that it was an XL size, giving me more fabric to work with!
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare Your Fabric
Start by washing and ironing the old pink shirt to remove any wrinkles.
Lay it flat and place your heart-shaped template on the fabric.
Trace the shape using chalk or a fabric pen, then cut out your fabric hearts.
Make larger hearts or experiment with half-of-a-heart designs for layered looks for added variety.
Create Your Hearts
To make your hearts sturdy, glue two fabric pieces together with the back sides facing inward or sew them with a sewing machine.
If you’re sewing, stitch around the edges, leaving a small opening to turn the heart right-side out.
Stuff with a bit of scrap fabric or batting before sewing the opening shut.
String the Garland
Thread a yarn needle with a long piece of twine or natural cord. Pierce through the tops of the hearts, ensuring the thread passes through the right sides.
Add pom poms, 3-D hearts, or embellishments like paint chips and strands of yarn between each heart for a special touch.
Assemble the Garland
Adjust the garland length to fit your chosen space, such as a fireplace mantle, dining room, or even a little girl’s room.
Tie off any loose ends, and your Valentine’s Day garland is ready to display!
Where to Use Your Heart Garland
This simple heart garland is perfect for:
- A festive touch for a dining room or fireplace mantle
- Valentine’s Day decorations
- Bridal showers
- Baby showers
I love this DIY heart garland. It is a different way to upcycle materials while adding a special touch to your decor. Whether you prefer to sew your hearts or use glue for a quicker project, this project is such a fun way to get into the swing of Valentine’s Day crafting.
